Flexible or Nonrefundable: Choosing a Hotel Rate

A cheaper prepaid rate is not always better value when travel plans can change.

The right hotel rate depends on both its price and your confidence in the dates. A flexible booking has value when flights, meetings or group plans are still unsettled.

Calculate the difference

Write down the total price for each rate, including taxes. The gap is the amount you are effectively paying for the option to cancel or move the stay.

Read the cancellation clock

Look for the exact deadline and the property's local time zone. Some flexible rates return money to the original payment method; others issue credit with an expiry date.

Decide using your plans

If the trip is fixed and the saving is meaningful, a prepaid rate may suit you. If plans are uncertain, compare the saving with the amount you could lose by cancelling.

Details and policies can change. Check the current terms with the seller or provider before deciding.
